The Rangers: An Introduction

The Rangers

We are The Rangers, a medium-sized, mixed Kinship based on the European Lord of the Rings Online (LotRO) roleplaying server [EN-RP] Laurelin.
We are a kinship where Questers meet Roleplayers, since we are a roleplaying kinship doing (endgame) kinship questing and raiding. We currently have around 50-60 players (of all ages and from various European countries) and being founded in July 2008, we are a lifespan rank 10 kinship.

We are a full-grown, friendly and active kin, aiming to help and protect those we can. Our motto is "Rangers lead the way!"
The goal of the Kinship is to increase the fun of playing LOTRO by facilitating player contact and by organizing events, promoting role playing and helping players who need a hand completing specific quests in the game. A mature and polite atmosphere is what characterizes the interaction of our members. We aim to be the place where questers meet roleplayers, so we have the best of both worlds. This means we will never be a hardcore raiding, neither a hardcore roleplaying kinship and that we do not require anyone to participate in roleplay or raiding. We do expect a basic interest/tolerance in both from our members. We try to develop the roleplaying skills of our members and we aim to make all endgame content available in kinship fellowships/raids for those who are stuck at level cap.

We arrange frequent activities like kinmeets, quests, book runs, endgame instace runs, raids (12-man and 24 man), sparring contests, and quests. We organize specific regular events, for example the weekly Book Night on Saturday (in which a fellowship tries to complete an epic book), Deed Day (in which we try to acquire one of the virtue deeds), endgame content runs (Moria/Lothlorien/Mirkwood) and a big old-skool raid bi-monthly (Helegrod, the Rift). Next to that, we have kinship fellowships completing fellowship quests on-the-go: We like to maintain a broad memberbase level-wise, so help can be provided on all levels. Furthermore, we have a kinship creepside tribe for those who want to try the unscripted battles of monsterplay (PvMP) in groups.

Our weekly kinmeet on Thursdays is a returning casual RP event, and, depending on player initiaves, personal RP plots are played kinwide. We also organise several plot-driven action role-playing events, often with our own storylines. Some of those have been supported by Codemasters Game Masters in the past.

Furthermore, we allow our members to sign up for events in advance as much as possible through our Event Calendar - this way we can fit the game in our lives and not the other way around.

The Rangers have an official Raiding Alliance with kinships The Last Banner and Bractwo Zmierzchu to do the regular Moria/Dol Guldur instances and the big raids, as well as the Creepside Monster Tribe called Azurz Grush (Killing Blow).

Kinship profile:

  • light roleplaying - we expect a basic interest in roleplaying, but you do not need to be a pro - we can teach you!
  • casual raiding - yes, we are active in end-game instances, but we are not hardcore grinders
  • medium sized kin with friendly helpful atmosphere - member cap at 60 players
  • english spoken - but players from all over europe
  • regular kin activities - we expect active participation, we do not allow "parking" of inactive alts in this kin

In character, we are an organization which aims to protect the Free Peoples of Middle Earth by scouting the wilderness and cleansing the lands of the evil that dwells there. The current Master of Rangers, Hír Vingelote Aermir of Balar, is convinced that the Union of the Four Races results in a strong group of warriors, and that the combination of strengths, rather than the differences between the Races is the true force of the Rangers. The Master of Rangers wields the Horn of the Rangers. When the Horn calls, Rangers forces are gathered to march to Battle and defeat forces of Angmar and Mordor. Upon brave deeds in the fields, Rangers are promoted and receive the Token of the Rangers, a brooch-like pin with a Horn engraved on it.

The IC background is used during kinmeets and our kinwide RP-plotlines.

The Kinship is ruled by the Council of Rangers, which takes all important decisions and which recruits and promotes new members. Currently, Vingilotz is the Master of Rangers (since December 2008) and Garthalion is Head Ranger and Heir. They are aided by 5 Officers: Lovela (General Officer), Morielen (Roleplaying Officer), Bonkil (Questing and Raiding Officer), Steinskaldir (Questing and Instancing Officer) and Caraorn (Instance and Raiding Officer). The Officers try to maintain stability and good atmosphere within the Kinship and are the guardians of the reputation of our Kinship. They have the right to take disciplinary actions if necessary. If you have a specific issue concerning our Kinship which needs to be adressed, do not hesitate to ask one of the Officers.

The Rangers Kinhouse is located at 5 Waterbank Road, in the Talad Ring neighborhood of the Falathlorn Homesteads in Ered Luin. It is a big Elven Hall with a nice Grand Room with a stage, a War Room (or Officer's Room) upstairs and two small rooms, one of which has a king-size bed to rest. Outside we have a big garden with riverside view and an old gazebo for ceremonial purposes. As a member of the Rangers, you will have a special "Return to Kinship House" skill, which will port you directly to the Kinhouse. You can find this skill in your skills tab. There are 3 kinchests in the kinhouse where valuable items are stored (like lvl 50 class quest items, scrolls, lvl 65 legendary weapons). Members can take items from the chests they can use and store new items they find, but cannot use themselves.
The kinhouse is the location for our regular meetings, special events (such as promotions ceremonies) and will be the starting point for most quest nights.

As a kin-member you can use kinship chat or our active forum to communicate with other members.
Kinship policy concerning chat channels: all talk in /say and /emote is in character (IC, roleplay) but talk in kinchat and fellowship chat will mostly be out-of-character (OOC), allowing kinmembers to know the players behind the toons.
We have a kinship Ventrilo voice server for improved voice communication (VOIP) during questing and raiding to replace ingame voice chat (no need to talk yourselves - but listening to the explanation of tactics and coordination is required on certain runs). Furthermore, we use the active forum and the Raid&Event planner extensively to plan and discuss - we expect all members to visit them regularly to keep up-to-date and to sign up for events and runs.

Since we value the close interaction of our members, we decided to be a medium sized kinship - therefore, whe have a member cap of 60 players (alts not included). 60 players allows us to have a memberbase where all endgame content can be unlocked, but the size remains "medium", so players are not lost in a mass of players. We generally have 25-45 players logging on a daily basis and over 50% of our members have toons at level cap (lvl 65).
This member cap policy means everyone can apply for membership, but depending on free spots and specific classes we may deny your application. Since we restrict ourselves to 60 players, we will generally only accept main characters and inactive players will be released after (unannounced) prolonged inactivity. This way, new spots will become available and it will ensure that we have a high member activity in the kinship.

You can view our class recruitment status on the left menu on the application page. Once you apply for membership, one of the kinship Officers will get to you for an OOC recruitment chat - the goal of this chat is to see whether you fit the kinship's profile and whether the kinship has to offer what you expect of it. Generally, Vingilotz, the kinship leader, will do the recruitment chats.

You can contact us if you are interested in joining the Rangers by using this form or by contacting one of the Officers ingame: Vingilotz (kinleader), Garthalion, Morielen, Bonkil, Lovela, Steinskaldir or Caraorn.
