The proper use of channels and emotes (originally posted by Vingilotz on the Rangers' Forum)
One of the most basic things to get your roleplaying going is the use of proper channels for communication in LotRO.
Use of chatbox Channels: In LotRO, various chat channels are available for communication. You can view them by pressing the chat bubble on the left of the text box.

- use /say for in character (IC) announcements from one game character to another: "Well met again, my friend Grithalion! I hope you are doing well?" "Let me introduce myself: I'm Vingilotz Laurelindorean, a Falathrim Elf."
- use fellowship chat or kinship chat for all out-of-character [OOC] talk from player to player: "Heya, anyone care to join me questing in the Misties?" "AFK for a minute for a bio break!"
Some roleplayers use double brackets for OOC announcements in the /say channel: " ((afk for a sec))." Since there are enough channels to communicate, we decided not to use this in The Rangers, since it distracts from IC talk.
Emotes Emotes are an essential part of roleplaying and interaction ingame. It's your non-verbal communication.
You can select an (animated) emote from the standard list in your chat box or type directly: /bow /laugh /handstand
You can also use custom emotes by typing "/e [whatever you want to emote]" in the chat box (independent of what channel you have selected).
Examples: /e sees Garthalion approach from the corner and brightens results in "Vingilotz sees Garthalion approach from the corner and brightens"
/e blushes and turns his head away in shame results in "Vingilotz blushes and turns his head away in shame"
